Friday, July 27, 2012

At 10:56 hours, the Emergency Communications Center alerted Station 15 & surrounding mutual-aid departments to a report of a Working Building Fire with injuries at 1696 S. Dupont Highway, North St. Georges. At 11:02 hours, 15-8 arrived on the scene to find a 50 x 100 warehouse type structure involved - with fire and smoke impingement on additional structures in the area. As the command post was being set-up (Side A), several interior explosions were heard coming from the involved structure. Additional information received was that this building was a metal scrapping facility with several combustible materials and flammable liquids stored inside the structure. Command was established and quickly ordered defensive operations only with exposure protection as the primary objective after all workers were accounted for outside the building. Simultaneously, there was one injured worker that was being treated by initial EMS resources arriving on the scene. This injured worker was transported via BLS to the Christiana Hospital for treatment and evaluation. Aerial Master Streams & Portable Monitors were placed in service for an extended period of time as the building interior contained a large quantity of combustible products. Additional resources and manpower were requested to respond to the scene not only due to the intensity of the fire, but the extreme heat and humidity conditions that were prevalent during this incident. The situation was placed under control at 13:45 hours with units remaining on the scene for several hours afterwards handling suppression efforts. The incident is under investigation by the New Castle County Fire Marshalls Office. There was no reported firefighter injuries during this incident.
