Water Rescue in Kent County
Sunday, May 14, 2023

On Sunday, May 14, 2023 at 9:15pm, Delaware City Fire Company Fireboat 15 along with the New Castle County Surface Water Rescue Team (SWRT) and Dive Team were dispatched to assist Kent County's Leipsic Vol. Fire Company and Citizens' Hose Company No. 1 Inc. of Smyrna, DE with a water rescue in the area of the Woodland Beach Pier.  Fireboat 15 was quickly underway and arrived in less than 30 minutes to assist with search efforts.  Sidescan and downscan sonar were used to identify underwater objects in the near zero visibility water.  Objects then needed to be checked by rescue swimmers and divers.  Increasing winds and seas combined with rapidly decreasing tides complicated efforts.  The Fireboat eventually anchored to serve as a dive platform for targeted underwater searches.  Our crew operated for over 5 hours before being released by command.
