Volunteer’s Family and Fire Company Family Provide Support through Critical Moments
New Castle, DE – At 9:52 pm on Saturday evening, a Delaware City Basic Life Support Unit responded to a collision involving a motorcycle on DuPont Highway and School Lane in the vicinity of the New Castle County Airport. Delaware City was providing ambulance coverage for the Wilmington Manor Fire Company. Upon arrival, and initial assessment of the patient, Ambulance Driver Michelle Smith, 29, was assisting the EMT on scene with patient care. A NCC Police Officer stopped to assist with traffic control, as rescue and fire police units from Wilmington Manor began to arrive.
A vehicle struck the County Police vehicle then striking Ms. Smith. The driver of the vehicle then fled the scene. Ms. Smith was treated on scene by NCC Paramedics and EMT’s from Minquadale Fire Company. She was transported to Christiana Emergency Department, where she was in stable condition and her injuries were further evaluated. Michelle suffered head, arm, and leg injuries and went into surgery overnight to address some of her injuries; however, she will also require additional surgery in the next few days. Her family was notified and present at the Emergency Room, along with a contingent of Delaware City Fire Company Officers and Members.
Delaware City would like to thank all the agencies involved for their efforts and support through this line of duty injury. Please understand that this incident is still an ongoing investigation.
We will continue to work with the family to provide them support and keep all of Michelle’s firefighter family and friends updated on the latest information. Please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers.
