Motor Vehicle Crash with Entrapment

March 15, 2024

At approximately 4pm on Wednesday March 13th, Good Will and Delaware City Fire Company along with resources from New Castle County Paramedics, Delaware State Police Aviation Section, and Port Penn Volunteer Fire Company responded to a motor vehicle accident with entrapment on River Road at Hamburg Road. All units made a quick response, with Ambulance B-18 arriving first, confirming one trapped and reporting a total of three patients. Rescue Engine 15 and Engine 18 arrived simultaneously and initiated extrication. Extrication efforts were delayed due to accessibility issues and the vehicle being into a large overgrown thorn bush. Extrication was completed and the patient was moved to State Police Helicopter Trooper 4 for transport to the local trauma center. In total, three patients were transported to area hospitals. Fire Police controlled traffic in the area during the incident.
Units responding included Ambulances B-18, A-15, and A-12, Engine 18, Rescue Engine 15, Rescue Engine 29, Medic 10, ALS 28, Trooper 4, Chief 18, and Asst. Chief 15-8B.

The River Road area between Grantham Lane in New Castle and Wrangle Hill Road in Delaware City is a dual dispatch area for Good Will and Delaware City. This is due to the history of severe crashes along this stretch, as well as distances from both fire stations.
