National EMS Memorial Bike Ride - New York to Virgina
May 18, 2009
Around 11 am over 150 bicyclists traveled through Delaware while heading to Roanoke, Virginia for the National EMS Memorial. This was the first year Delaware would be apart of this memorial after the Line of Duty Deaths of Firefighter / EMT Michelle L. Newton-Smith, 29, of Delaware City Fire Company, who was killed in the line of duty after being struck at the scene of a call on December 22, 2008 and Stephanie Callaway, 31, a Sussex County Paramedic, Georgetown, DE, who was killed in the line of duty of injuries sustained in an ambulance involved motor vehicle collision on June 17, 2008. The officers and members of the Delaware City Fire Company would like to thank all of the riders, supporters and organizers that made this week (National EMS Memorial Week) possible.
The Delaware City Fire Company had Fire and EMS apparatus in every intersection in the district covered. Units on scene: Engine 15-4, Engine 15-5, Ladder 15-7, TSU-15, BLS A-15, B-15, Fire Police and Some support units.
Flag draping at the base of the Saint Georges bridge was made possible thanks to Chief Ron Dietrick and Ladder 34(Delaware City Refinery)
This is the last time the bicyclist will ride through Delaware due to Colorado Springs, Colorado being selected as the new host city for the annual National EMS Memorial Service and the permanent location of the new “Tree of Life,” National EMS Memorial.
