National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Memorial Service - Emmitsburg, MD
October 04, 2009
Members of the Fire Company and Ladies Auxiliary traveled to the National Fire Academy for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Memorial Service on Sunday, October 4, 2009.
Members boarded a bus at around 06:30 hours at the station for the 2.5 hour journey. When we arrived at the Fire Academy we were greeted with a bright sunny breezy fall day.
The members were able to meet up with the Newton Family to offer our support and comfort. Past Presidents Jasper Lakey and Mike McMichael arrived in Emmitsburg on Friday night as Past President Lakey served as the family escort for the weekend.
For the next 2 hours we watched as tributes for 112 fallen heroes were announced by each State. Each recipient received a United States flag, a rose and a medal of honor. It was a very humbling experience to watch.
Once the ceremony was over, our members were able to view the different bricks that were place in memory of Michelle. We joined up with the Newton Family for lunch and then made our way to the Fallen Firefighter’s Memorial to view the names for 2008 and years past.
As this was an event none of us ever wanted to attend, this will be one that we will never forget.
Special thank you to Dave "Pop" Jones and Dave Horack from the Christiana Fire Company for the use of their pictures.
