November 12, 2009

It is with a heavy heart that the Delaware City Fire Company announces the passing of 65 Year Life Member Jack Armstrong on November 10, 2009. Mr. Armstrong was one of our oldest living members at the time of his passing. He served our Fire Company in many capacities during his 65 years of service. He served many years as our Chief Engineer, Secretary and Board of Director. Mr. Armstrong not only was a dedicated member of the fire company he also was dedicated to the City of Delaware City. A lifelong resident of Delaware City, Mr. Armstrong was active in many local government and civic organizations. He served for a time as the Delaware City police chief and as a member of city council. He was also one of the originators of the Delaware City Community Park District and served as the group's president for 16 years. He also served as an elder of the First Presbyterian Church. Other memberships included Jackson Lodge #19, AF&AM (where he was a Past Master and a 32nd Degree Mason), the Delaware City Lions Club, and the Fort Delaware Society. He was especially well known to friends and neighbors as the Delaware City town historian. Mr. Armstrong would visit the fire station daily and would hold court in the lounge with the other life long members. Mr. Armstrong was a great friend to many members of the fire company and his passing leaves a void for many us. A funeral service will be held at 11 am, on Saturday, November 14, at the First Presbyterian Church, 138 Jefferson Street, Delaware City, DE, where visitation will begin at 10 am. Interment will follow in Delaware City Cemetery on Clinton Street.
