MVC w/ Heavy Entrapment - (M29D4) - S. DuPont Highway / Red Lion Road

May 04, 2010

At 15:40 hrs, Delaware City and Wilmington Manor Fire Companies were alerted for a motor vehicle collision with entrapment at S. DuPont Highway & Red Lion Road. B-27 was returning from the hospital from another run and made the response to the MVC arriving at the scene at 15:44 hrs reporting one subject heavily entrapped. Apparatus from both Wilmington Manor & Delaware City arrived on scene to find a two vehicle accident involving a Tractor Trailer and a Passenger-Caravan Vehicle. Chief Rosseel (15-8) arrived on scene and assumed DuPont Highway command advising the rescue operation would be an extended operation due to the mechanism involved. The caravan vehicle involved in this collision was specially equipped with a motorized handicapped ramp which was recessed on the exterior rear of the vehicle. During the extrication process, crews also noticed additional rebar support beams that were placed in the posts which appeared to provide additional support for the special operations of this vehicle. Additional challenges with this rescue operation was that the entire engine compartment (as well as some of the patient compartment area) was up, under, and entangled with the under carriage of the tractor trailer. Crews worked diligently together throughout the extrication process and the patient was removed from the wreckage at 16:27 hrs. The patient was then transported by B-27 and Medic 2D to the Christiana Hospital for treatment & evaluation. Responding Apparatus: B-15, R-15, 15-5, A-32, 28-6, 32-5, TSU-28, 288-C, B-27, NCC Paramedic 2D, ALS-12, ALS-21, ALS-26, EMS-1, 15-9, 15-9C, 15-9E, Zone 3 Fire Police, DSP and DelDot.
