Fire Police Struck by Vehicle While Directing Traffic at Crash Scene

Delaware City, DE – The Delaware City Fire Company No. 1 regrets to report that Fire Police Captain Dennis Layton Sr. (15-9) was struck by a vehicle while performing traffic control duties at the scene of a motor vehicle accident. The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 AM on October 8, 2024, at the intersection of Wrangle Hill Road and McCoy Road.

Captain Layton, who has served with the Delaware City Fire Company since 2006, was actively directing traffic when the incident occurred. He was immediately treated on-scene by Delaware City Fire Company EMS and New Castle County Advanced Life Support (ALS) before being transported to a nearby hospital. His current medical condition is stable. The Delaware State Police are investigating the accident and have issued a citation to the driver for inattentive driving.

Captain Layton, 61 years old, has been a dedicated member of the fire company for 18 years and currently serves as Fire Police Captain. His contributions to the department and the safety of the community have been invaluable.

The Delaware City Fire Company No. 1 reminds the public to exercise extreme caution when approaching accident scenes or roadside first responders. Delaware's "Move Over" law requires drivers to slow down and, if possible, move over a lane when emergency personnel are present on the roadside. This law is critical for ensuring the safety of those working to protect the public.

Further updates regarding Captain Layton’s condition will be provided as they become available.
